Question
I got my first ferret, Milo, around a week ago for my
birthday. He's a year old and the family we got him from
said that he was a rescue from an abusive home. He's a
neutered and descented Marshall ferret. Introduction over -
I wanted to ask about him getting used to his new home and
family and you seemed like the best choice. :)
Okay, I heard that male ferrets as a whole are generally
less sociable than female ferrets - and that this behavior
only increases as they get older. This concerned me because
Milo doesn't really seem very sociable - not as sociable as
I thought ferrets were anyway. I let him out of his cage for
about four hours every day to run around and I can play with
him a little bit - I can't pet him though. I don't bother
trying to pet him and get cuddles while it's play time cause
I know he needs to bounce around and what not; but every
time I do try he bends his back so that I'm just barely
touching his fur and the only time I can hold him without
him squirming to get away is when he's passed out and
sleeping again.
What do you think? Does he only need more time to adjust to
his move into a new home? Could this possibly have anything
to do with him coming from an abusive home in the past? Is
there something I should know as a new ferret owner? Thanks
for your time and I hope to hear from you soon!
PS: Sorry but I can't help but add this. How often should I
bathe him? For the life of me I can't figure out if I should
once a month, once every three months, once a year - there's
so many different answers! Do you have the right one?

Answer
It may be that he needs time to adjust, but he also needs a vet check-up.  There could be a reason he doesn't like being held; anything from an injury to lack of experience.  Lots of people have different views on bathing a ferret, I never bath mine unless they get dirty from playing in mud or poop.
