Question
My 4 yr old shih tzu has a liter of 7 on saturday. Pups are great..gaining weight. She never showed any in your face tale tale signs of labor friday night. I took her temp and realized something was happening. She was great..no complications and settled in nicely. Yesterday afternoon she started acting weird..she suddenly "forgot" how to get back into the puppy box and she isnt satisfied unless they are all on her nursing and only if she is laying down. Otherwise she is acting very nervous and will actually paw at the pups while they are sleeping and not even crying..she will whine at them until i come in and make her lay down and put the pups on her. Then she is fine for a while. She went under my bed and ran to the other side a couple times periodically like she didnt know what to do when they were sleeping.. This is her 3rd litter but i dont remember if she acted quite this way anyother time. She was eating ok up until today..she doesnt want to eat even with cottage cheese in her food. Is this normal or is there somethin else going on? she has an appt. for the vet tommorrow evening but should i be concerned now? Thank you!

Answer
Hi. I'm really not sure what's going on with your girl, this is odd behavior, especially for a dog that has whelped before. Is there anything different going on in your house this litter that didn't happen with the last two? The eating thing has me concerened, if she's not eating she can't make milk. If she's not eating, something is going on with her. I would call your vet back and see if you can bring her in today. Get her a good check up. If everything's ok wit her that way, then I would make sure that her puppy room is kept quiet with no other dogs allowed in there, and keep the humans limited as well. Good luck, and please let me know what the vet says.
