My dog wont urinate in our own yard

Question
Hello,
My 1 1/2 year old female Shid Tzu is wonderful.  She is house broken.  She will pee in the morning, afternoon and at night.  She poops every morning.

The problem is she wont do anything in our own yard.  A walk everyday is healthy but it is the only way to get her to go.
Even after going 13 hours over night, when I take her out and  spend over an hour in our yard, she doesn't go.  If I take her one or two houses away she will.

I don't so much mind walking her to poop, that's once a day.
Is there anything we can put down on the grass that would attract her to go there?

We recently have a family of Coyotes that have been attacking the small animals in the neighborhood.  I would rather not stray far from our yard at night.

Please help,
Robin

Answer
Robin, you are simply going to have to be more stubborn than she is. When you take her out, walk her around the yard for 5-10 minutes, then go back inside. Try again in 15-20 minutes. Eventually she WILL go potty, at which point you should praise her in a happy voice and let her know what a good girl she is for pottying in the yard!

When you take her for her walks, and she goes potty, if you don't already do it, start putting a 'command' to the action by repeating a short phrase over and over again as she is doing her business. Then praise her when she's done, using that short phrase (ie: "Good girl, good go potty! Good girl!"). The phrase that I use is 'Go Hurry,' but you can use any phrase you want. Then, after a week or two of doing that while on walks, try saying it when you take her out in your yard. Odds are, she will go potty! ;^)
