Dog peeing on New BBQ Grill

Question
Henry,
I have a neutered 26 lb Minpin (7 yrs old) that is potty trained for indoors.  However, how do I train "Tyson" to stop peeing on my Kenmore BBQ Grill on the deck?  We have a doggy door so my dogs (2) can come and go as they please in the back yard.  I've tried showing him where he peed at and give a light swat followed by "bad dog".  It stopped for a while, but he started up again.  Now, he gets scared every time I go look in the backyard.  Thoughts?

Answer
You need to be with the dog when it goes out and enforce where it goes. Get something to make a loud noise (bike horn, big pots, etc) and every time the dog goes near the BBQ,(aversion training) make the loud noise. Swatting the dog does not help. Reward the correct locations with a dog treat, etc. You should away from the BBQ so the dog doesn't learn it only gets the loud noise when you are around.  Get a couple other people to help make the distracting noise.

There is also counter-training, where you train the dog to go on the BBQ for a treat and command, then never give the treat and command. That works, but usually takes longer. It also doesn't help the BBQ.
