Digging Dogg

Question
HI, I have a 6 month old mixed breed dog, I was told he is part chiwawa and part terrier, he ways 11 pounds.  He has dug up our whole yard, we have holes everywhere in our yard.  He as dug all of my flowers out of my flower pots and he digs under the fence and he and my other two dogs get out so I now have to keep him tied up when I am at work to make sure he does not dig out of the yard and he continues to dig holes every where his chain can reach.  My husband wants to get rid of him, but I don't.  We have a really huge yard with allot of fence.  Is there anything that can me done to make him stop digging?  Please help.

Answer
Actually, there is only one solution I think may work.  Terriers are natural diggers and are unlikely to stop, so what about building him a pit where he can dig?  Fill it with sand or loose dirt, and bury some dog biscuits in it for him to find (go and "help" him hunt them up the first time).  If he digs anywhere else, just redirect him to the pit.  This will require you to spend lots of time outside with him, and not leave him out there alone at first.  Another reason dogs dig is because of boredom!  Also, I would prefer to see you have a chain link kennel with a concrete floor for him instead of a chain - chaining is dangerous. Sometimes, if you can't afford to get your dog unchained, these people may help: http://www.dogsdeservebetter.com/
