Pomeranian eating hers and others bowel movements

Question
We just got a new Pomeranian puppy but when we take her out she trys to eat everything including her own left behind bowel movements as well as other animals.  Can you help me with this?  Shes eating Purina Puppy Chow, the previous owner told us thats what we should feed her, but, I think that might be the problem.  Can you help?
Also, whats the best way to train them?

Answer
It's not an uncommon problem with puppies. Momma dogs keep their pups' area clean that way, and sometimes they mimic this behavior. While a better quality food might help, I would be concentrating on teaching her to "leave it!" and treating her for moving away from the feces. Also, of course, you want to keep your yard poop scooped. Pineapple or meat tenderizer in the food can help if the problem is that there's still a lot of nutrition passing through, but not if the dog is doing it for other reasons. Here's a pretty good article:

My favorite way to train is with a clicker and positive motivation (and "leave-it" is a behavior we work on pretty early) You may want to check your area to see if you can find a good, positive puppy class. Sandy Case BFA MEd CPDT www.positivelycanine.com
