Question
i have an 8 month old king Charles who wont sleep through the night. he wakes up several times during the night and when he does he barks and scratches the door until somebody comes out to give out to him. we have tried ignoring him but it just doesn't work. have you any tips or methods?

Answer
Hi Ciara:

First I always suggest puppies sleep in the same room, in a create as the human whom is old enough to wake should they need out for potty.  Separating a puppy from it's new family, is not beneficial.

Once the dog is older and can go though the night, moving the create slowly to another location is the way to go, should you not wish the dog to sleep in a bedroom with a human.

For the dogs comfort at night, a ticking clock or radio on very low, can provide some comfort.

Feed and Water for the last time before bed approximately two hours prior to that time.  Enough to keep a puppy full, but not enough to cause a need to go potty during the night.

Most people turn the heat down during the night, ensure the dogs bed is in a warm location and is not getting too chilled.

Check for external sounds that occur during the night that may stress him.

If when taken out during the night he does potty, check for bladder infection or intestinal parasites, as these can cause a need for frequent potty needs.
