Adding another dog to family

Question
I hope you can help me. I have a 9 yr old female chihuahua, she weighs 5 lbs. I want to add another dog to our family but have heard chihuahua's don't normally like other dogs. I am willing to get another chihuahua if necessary, but wonder if she will adjust. We have had her since she was 1 yr old when we adopted her and she is spoiled. If I do add another dog, do you think she would adjust better to an adult dog or young dog, say around 6 months. I don't want a puppy. Any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated as I do not want to upset my Lucy, I love her very much . Thanks so much for the help.

Answer
Hello Jolene:

I am unaware of any breed not doing well with other dogs or pets, if they have been properly socialised as puppies.

Dogs are pack animals and a pack can consist of many species,Human, dog, cat, bird, rabbit etc. etc. etc..

Most small breeds are known to suffer from what trainers and behaviourists call Napoleon syndrome.  This is purely incorrect training and handling by owner.  They are not born to be individuals, dominant or aggressive.

I would however suggest bringing in a dog as young as possible, to avoid the possibility of dealing with a dog with issues related to up-bringing.

Calm consistent leadership and slow controlled integration is the way to bring any new dog into the house.

Your dogs current temperament, will dictate the success of bringing in a new dog and the temperament of that dog as well.
