Question
I am puppy sitting my boyfriends Jack Russell who's name is Carter.  I have a big back yard and a 4ft vinyl fence around it.  Carter cannot stand to be left alone and goes right over the fence.  I need to find a way to stop this fence jumping.  I know its anxiety for him and that he just doesn't want to be left.

Answer
Hi Toni!

I will give a couple suggestions, but they are more for long term solutions.  If you are pet sitting for a short time, I'm not sure if these will be viable solutions for you but here goes.

One way to keep a dog from jumping the existing fence is to put in an electric fence wire around the inside perimeter.  There are some made for small animals like dogs, and are a good solution.

Another possibility would be to build or buy a chain link fence type dog run with a top on it, so the dog can't jump over.

Both of these options would cost money, so I'm not sure if they are helpful to you.  One thing you may try is making sure the dog has a couple of Kong type toys that you can stuff with treats or peanut butter.  As long as he is not left in the area for too long, these toys will probably keep him occupied for a while.

Good luck!
