Dog Has Toilet Problems

Question
Hi, I have a Springer Spaniel, approx age 5yrs. He wasn't wanted by his previous owner and unceremoniously dumped on me. He's had a few previous owners and is also scared of men. When we "rescued" him 8 months ago, he didn't know basic comands such as sit, fetch etc. I've managed to train him up, but the only problem we have with him now is when he's going for a walk and stops for a poo, he'll have a bit, walk away, couple minutes later stops again, etc etc, so I have to stop several times, he never has it in one sitting, so to speak! He's not constipated and eats good quality food. I also worm him regular. Is it possible to get him to learn to stay until he's finished? Thank you.

Answer
Hi, Jude!

I would recommend walking until your dog starts to poop, then stay in that same spot (don't let him keep walking) for at least 10 minutes to encourage him to finish his business before moving on.  When is does what you want, give plenty of praise.  Hopefully he will get the hang of it after a few outings.  Good luck!
