Sore?

Question
Hello, we abopted a dog about a week ago from a woman who saves them from being put down at local shelters.
The dog has been altered and had its shots so it has seen a vet recently.
My husband gave it a bath the other night after her staples where removed.  He had her in the bath when we noticed we could not find the doggy shampoo so he used baby shampoo.
She has been kind of chewing on her back leg at the joint. Have not noticed her doing this anywhere else.
I don't know if she was doing this before or after the bath but today I noticed about a nickel size spot that seems to have been chewed raw.  It is missing the hair and is pink.
There is no obvious injury like something bit her or anything.
She does not have fleas or ticks and the mosquitos are not out right now.
It is not pussing or bright red, just looks irritated.
I have some hydrocortizone with aloe for dogs I put on it.
Is there anything else I can do?  Does this sound like an allergy?
I don't want to rush her to the vet if I can treat it at home.
 Thanks.

Answer
Hello!

Sounds like you got a pretty good little pooch!  The sore could be caused by so many reasons.  One may be that she is doing it by nervous habit, kinda like people who bite their nails.  It also may very well be some type of fungus like ringworm. Ringworm is circular looking and there will be no hair.  Ringworm will not be bloody,  but kinda dry and scaly.  If you suspect this,  mix some water and bleach and dab it on there daily.  Sounds harsh, but it will kill that ringworm!  But don't do this if it is raw, or bloody.  I would watch it,  and just see what happens. If it gets worse or spreads, then I would take  her to the vet for a skin scraping.   You sound like you are a very responsible pet owner,  and I don't blame you, I don't rush mine to the vet either unless its absolutely necessary.

Good luck and God Bless,
Becky
