Beagle that bolts!

Question
Our adorable and funloving beagle is well behaved in the
house and on leash. However, if the door is open and he
can..he escapes! He takes off and it is sheer luck that we
are able to catch him. We are unsure why this change in
behavior and why he won't listen when he gets out like
that.
Any ideas?
His name is Benny.

Answer
Get an empty coke can and fill it with seven pennies.  put tape over the top.

Set your dog up..   Have someone outside the  door, hiding,  and let someone inside open the door and pretend not to notice that your dog is ready to bolt... As the dog bolts  the person outside  shakes the can vigorously in the dogs face as he just reaches the door and makes to go outside.  While they shake the can they yell  "stay"  very firmly and with some aggression in the voice.

If this doesn't work put the dog on leash in the house and each time he goes to exit, snap him back and tell him to stay.   Also when you take him out.  Make sure he sits while you go out first EVERY Time.

Last but not least,  a shock collar can be used.  BUt your timing must be perfect and the only time you use it is when he bolts.
