puppy poop?

Question
My three month old Alaskan Malamute pup has been in our home for three weeks now and was doing wonderfully.  For three days she has been trying to pee every 5 minutes or so even if she can't eliminate any.  She does the same thing with poopin.  However today she started to poop liquid (not diarrhea) but liquid.  After that she keeps trying to pee and poop with only a little success.  Her diet had a slight change in it but nothing major.  She is still happy and bouncing around like herself but is weird with her bathroom breaks.  Any ideas or advice? thanks a bunch, Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

I don't know what you mean by: "Her diet had a slight change in it but nothing major. " What seems insignificant to you, may cause diarrhea, and upset stomach in a dog or puppy. Any change of diet should take place gradually, over a period of 5-7 days.

The frequent urination along with the straining to urinate, even when she doesn't have to pee, sounds like your puppy might have a urinary track infection. The liquid stools might be from the change of diet, and just happening coincidentally at the same time as  the urine problem.

Think if your puppy was your human baby. If your baby has a soft stool in his/her diaper, but not a cause for you to seek your doctors advise, maybe you have tried a new food, then like the baby, the puppy, if likely fine to home treat. BUT, if your baby, had uncontrolled diarrhea (uncontrolled liquid squirts is called secondary severe diarrhea), you would seek a medical doctors advise, as there could be an underlying cause. Like a Baby, a puppy can dehydrate FAST from severe diarrhea. REMEMBER, diarrhea can be mild or severe and the treatments differ.

Your puppy needs more than guesswork, please have her examined by your vet. Don't delay in contacting your vet, since this has been going on for 3 days, and is not showing signs of subsiding. Puppies are susceptible to dehydration, which is a serious concern when diarrhea is present for several days.

Best of luck,
Patti
