Loss of peristalsis

Question
My dog Ivory has had many problems.  She was born without a key digestive enzyme, so we have to give her a powder (panzyme) to help her digest her food.  Four-five days ago, she had suddenly stopped defecating, and had begun to vomit after eating.  After taking her to the vet, my parents and I learned that her intestines were no longer preforming the necessary peristalsis.  The vet prescribed her special food, and she is now taking three-four different types of pills.  She still eats and drinks well, but it is hard for her to move around, and she is very lethargic.  Is there anything else we can do to help her?  What actions should we take, as we don't want her to suffer.

Answer
Hi Ana,

It's good that your dog is eating and drinking again. Have you spoken to your vet regarding your dog's lethargy? It could be a side effect from the medication.

Sometimes, a dog needs a higher tier of treatment than a local vet an provide. Is there a veterinary teaching hospital in your area which could evaluate your dog?

Best of luck,
Patti
