Question
I have a Lahso Apso and she is 15 years old.  Lately she has been sleeping a lot and not eating.  She is also losing her hair.  She is drinking her water and still pooping good.  I can feel her bones on her back she is getting so skinny.  It has been about 2 days since she ate.  I have tried everything.  I even made scambled eggs last night.  I was wondering if she sounds like she is just getting old or if it something worse because of her losing her hair.  I would apprecaite any advice you could give me.  Her teeth are bas and I was wondering maybe her teeth hurt.  Is there something liquid over the counter I could give her just to give her sone nutrients?  Thank you for your time.  Cheryl

Answer
Hi Cheryl,

Your dog needs to be examined by your vet.

The loss of weight and hair sounds like she may be having a thyroid problem, or the problem could be a tooth abscess or other dental problem.

It's impossible for me or anyone to guess at what the trouble is, and your dog deserves a lot better than guesswork!
Please don't delay in seeking treatment for your dog. Given her age, problems can escalate quickly. In what ordinarily may be a simple and quick treatment,  in elderly pets an ignored condition can quickly spiral into something more serious.

Best of luck,
Patti
