Regression with Potty Training

Question
I have a 6 month old female Cockapoo who was 99% potty trained. 1 week ago she was spayed. Now she defecates on the sofa? This never happened before and she occasionally urinates inside now. Could this be related to the surgery?

Answer
Heidi, either a dog is potty trained or is not. Saying a dog is 99% potty trained is like saying you are 99% married. Either you are or you aren't! ;^)

Having said that, it is not uncommon for some females to have a little bit of a regression in house breaking after being spayed, just like women who have hysterectomies can often have trouble controlling their bladder afterwards. It often goes away with time, as the muscles heal.

As for her pooping on the sofa, no, I do not believe that is related to the surgery. Does she do it in front of you or when you are not home? If she does it when you are not at home, you are going to have to confine her in some way so that she does not have access to the sofa at all. Make sure she poo's before you leave the house.
