female in heat with 2 males in the house

Question
Hi, I have 3 yorkies, Whiskey (male), lala (female), Porter (male-their pup).  I haven't fixed any of them and never really intended for them to breed. And I still don't want to. The first litter was a mistake, the female is to little to breed. But now she is in heat and my males are going insane. My Whiskey isn't to bad, he is my little angel and I think the thought of me threatning him has him scared to even sniff her. But Porter is insane. He cries all day and is driving everyone in the house insane. I have her seperated but she cries all day as well. And when I first put them together she runs up to Porter to sniff him and he sniffs her as well but before Porter can even attempt to hump her I seperate the two. I don't want to keep doing this and I know my best bet is to get those two fixed, (not my Whiskey, I want a puppy out of him but not with that female), but when should I do it? and what can I do for now? I love my little Porter but he is driving us all insane and I can't have lala going through this again an have any more mistakes. I'm afraid the next litter might take her life.

Answer
Hi Erica,

Having your Porter and Lala neutered and spayed will end the problem of unwanted litters and strong hormonal mating instincts.

You can neuter a male dog at any age, at any time. There's no need to wait.
Female dogs get the most health benefits from being spayed before the onset of their first heat, but that time is past for Lala.  You can have her spayed at any time, as long as they aren't nursing.

After being neutered, if can take several weeks for Porter's hormone levels to drop, and for him to "calm down". He can even make a female pregnant for some time after being neutered, because of the active sperm already in his body. So you should either have Lala and Porter spayed/neutered at the same time, or you should have Lala spayed first.

Until you have your dogs fixed, you should keep Porter and Lala separated.

Best of luck,
Patti
