Question
QUESTION: hi there. me and my husband adopted a rottie/lab from the pound about ten months ago. we don't know her exact age, our vet thinks five, but there is no way. she has cataracts, is lame in her back legs and sleeps alot. We think she is about 8 or 9. Anyways, we had to have her spade in order to adopt her, so we did in that in April 2007. For the last week i have noticed some blood on her bed, and today i noticed she is bleeding more than usual. is this heat? it can't be i know, but i can't think what else it could be. I can't get her to the vet until tuesday, was wondering if you have any idea waht is going on and if there is anything i can do until tueday arrives.
sincerely,
Karina Lanting

ANSWER: I hope you've taken your dog to the vet by now. If she is spayed then this is serious, it could be a severe kidney infection. Don't wait take her in now, she shouldn't be bleeding at all if she is spayed.

QUESTION: thank you for your response. our vet thought it may be a urinary tract infection and had us take a urine sample this morning to bring in to her. after tests, she found nothing, but out vet doesn't seem to be too worried. she mentioned that when she spayed nellie, it was difficult, as she is an old dog and there was alot of stuff going on in there, as she put it. So I am wondering if maybe this is just heat. however, my mext question is, what would bring about a kidney infection and what are the symptoms? I am also considering bringing her to a different vet tomorrow, as our vet hasn't really rushed us to bring our nellie in for an inspection yet.
thank you again.

Answer
Again, if your dog is spayed, she cannot be in heat. It's just not possible as all of her female organs should have been removed. If she has a kidney or bladder infection she may be a bit droopy, may pee in small amounts frequently, may have a fever or may have no other symptoms. I urge you to get your dog to a different vet for evaluation. She needs a full workup of bloodtests and a good examination to determine where the bleeding is coming from and the cause. It could even be diabetes, but without a thorough exam there's no way of knowing.
