how much to feed a cairn terrier?

Question
QUESTION: I was wondering how much I should feed him. Usually I feed him about a half a cup for each meal. And I feed him 3 times a day. He's 11 weeks old at the moment.

ANSWER: Hi, Jeff. What I usually do is go by the size that the puppy will be as an adult. Cairn terriers generally weigh between 10 and 15 pounds when they are fully grown. Look on your bag of dog food and see how much it says to feed an adult dog that weighs 10 pounds. That is what I would be feeding the puppy each day. You can split that amount in half and feed twice a day, or split it by 3 and continue to feed three times a day as you do now. However, at his age, it's okay to start feeding him twice a day if you like. Do not feed whatever amount it says to feed at >>each<< feeding, though. I think that's where a lot of people mess up. That amount is the recommended daily amount, meaning that's how much food the dog should get each day, not each meal.  ;^)

You didn't say what kind of kibble you are feeding, so I'd like to share some information about how to pick the right food for your dog. Please take a look at http://dogfoods.angelfire.com when you get a moment.

QUESTION: i'm feeding him royal canine for puppies.

one more question:

if I accidently let my puppy go pee on the floor in the house, will it affect his housetraining? Sometimes I leave him alone for like one minute and he pees. =/

Answer
Royal Canin is not on my list of recommended foods. It contains wheat, corn, and other less-than-premium ingredients. Again, take a look at http://dogfoods.angelfire.com to learn more about what to look for and avoid when choosing a dog food.

Yes, every time your puppy potties on the floor in the house, he learns that it's okay to do so. Don't let him out of your sight for a moment!
