Giant schnauzer puppy with HORRIBLE gas

Question
My husband recently got a ginat schnauzer puppy for my son to play with. This dog has HORRIBLE gas, we cannot afford to feed the dog fresh chicken/veggies, we have tried a few different foods and nothing seems to work. We make sure not to feed him tabel scraps and we dont even let him pick up the crumbs that my son leaves behind (my son is 20 months old). Anyway, the puppy is 8 months old and we are currently feeding him Benefull. His gas usually occurs @ night and can clear out a room....WOW! Any suggestions?

Answer
I would try a different chow.  I doubt the Beneful is a problem in general, but not all chows will work for all dogs.  I think it is a chicken and vegetable based chow.  Maybe try a lamb and rice one, or a beef one.

It is quite difficult to prepare a good home made diet for a dog.  neither I, nor the AVMA suggest trying, http://www.avma.org/press/releases/070404_homemade_diets.asp

I also don't buy into the idea such problems can only be solved by feeding an expensive, premium chow.  I have seen manyreports where somebody solved the problem by switching to one of the common brands.

You might talk to the breeder you got the puppy from.  Sometimes the best answer is to stick to what they weaned the puppies on.  Large breeds should be switched to an adult chow at 4 months.
