Question
hi there, i hope you can help me pllllllease.   i have a 5 year old yorkshire terrier, he likes to greet othr dogs over the park and sometimes play with them.   but now i have rescued a 4 month old staffie and the yorkie seems so unhappy.  he is not showing any signs of obvious fear, ie shaking, not eating or anything, it is just that he wont be in the same room as the pup and gets nasty when it comes near him and he feeld like he cant get away.  all he wonts to do is run upstairs and hide.  he still wants to come out an enjoy his walks but i dont know if he is genuinley scared or just unhappy and i dont know what to do now.  it has only been a week but i cant see any improvement at all.   i just want scamp to come back into the family and enjoy being with us again..  please help i cant sleep for feeling guilty, all i wanted to do was help the staffie but not destroy my yorkie in the process.

many thanks  and happy christmas

Answer
Once past 3 years old, many dogs don't want anything to do with puppies, their sharp little teeth, and their biting games.  You need to teach the puppy to leave the older dog alone.  As soon as the puppy starts to focus on the older dog, give it a sharp ''Ah, ah, ah!'' and offer it a chew toy.

Our daughter is here with their 6 year old terrier mix.  He doesn't like our 4 month old Golden.  They do adjust eventually.
