Breathing difficulty

Question
I have a 7yr old Westie bitch who often seems to struggle to catch her breath. It does not appear to be exercise related as she does it during or after and sometimes when resting. She seems to struggle and becomes quite distressed as some attacks can last several minutes. I have consulted a vet and they can see no reason for her doing this.  I am worried and don't know what to do for her. I try to keep her calm and reassure her. I'm at my wit's end

Answer
Hi Paula,

What diagnostic tests did your vet run?

Breathing problems such as what you've described can be a symptom of many things, ranging from: heart disease, asthma,  allergic reactions, bronchitis, pneumonia, paralysis or obstruction of the trachea, poisoning, and many other conditions.

If your current vet could not figure out what your dog's problem is, it's then time to have your dog examined by another vet. You should see a vet as soon as possible.

Best of luck,
Patti
