Question
I have a 3 month old female Yorkie poodle mix who constantly chews. I have a crate for her, but I do not like to leave her in it when I leave because it seems to traumatize her. She chewed the little air holes on the side of her crate so hard that it made her mouth bleed. I left her in the bathroom today and left for about three hours. I came back and she had chewed the shower curtain, toilet seat, all wood, and an entire roll of toilet paper. This is after I sprayed a product called Bitter Yuk everywhere. It is supposed to taste horrible and keep dogs from chewing but it is useless on her it seems. I left her a kong toy in the bathroom to play with but she obviously ignored it. How can I stop this? I rent a house so I cannot have her causing all this damage. It is getting very expensive. I already have her enrolled in obedience classes but they don't seem to be working. I still owe $700 on her, and love her very much so I really don't want to have to give her to someone else. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
These cases can be very difficult. I think much of the problem is caused by breeders that keep the puppies past 7-8 weeks and fail to socialize them.  The puppy that was never left by itself before 12 weeks may do very poorly as you are seeing.

Try filling the Kong with peanut butter.  With a little luck, she will work at licking it out and be too tired to be destructive by the time she is finished.

You can talk to the vet about medication.

Don't leave her by herself all day.  If you must be gone more than 4-5 hours, see if you can find a neighbor or professioinbal dog walker to give her a break.
