false pregnancy attracting males?

Question
it seems that our 10 month old Chessie is having a false pregnancy(swollen boobs, some nesting behaviour decrease in apetite).  One of the most noticable things for me as the principal dog walker is the attention she is recieveing from male dogs who are keen to sniff and then mount her much to her annoyance.  Is this normal? she had her heat in april and we are now in the latter part of june.  This has been definitely happening for a week now- do you know how long it is likely to last? thanks for any advice

Answer
Hi Mags,

Something like 90% of false pregnancies in dogs resolve over a period of two to three weeks with no treatment. Since your dog's false pregnancy is lasting longer than 3 weeks, you should have her examined by your vet. Some dogs need hormonal treatment to get back to normal.

Recurrence of false pregnancy is common. If you have no intention to breed your female dog, the kindest thing to do is to have her spayed. That would make this bout of a false pregnancy, her last.

Best of luck,

Patti
