Question
My dog got the mange and am worried am going to get it because he has being everywhere in my house on my bed.

Answer

Hi Frances,

There are three different kinds of mange dogs can get: Demodectic, Cheyletiella, and Sarcoptic. Each is caused by a different species of mite.

Demodectic mange (unlike Sarcoptic mange) is not considered a contagious disease. Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious to other dogs and also contagious to humans, and is known as scabies. If your dog has Sarcoptic mange you should talk to your doctor, as you may need medication.
Cheyletiella (also called Walking dandruff) is highly contagious both to humans and to other dogs. It causes mild itching. The mite that causes the mange dies a short time after leaving the host.

Your dog's mange needs to be treated with medications specific to the kind of mange he has. Your vet can provide you with the proper medication or medicated shampoo. Your dog might also require antibiotics.

You need to clean your dog's bedding. Mites can hide in blankets and plush toys. Replace your dog's collar, mites can hide in or attach to a collar. Wash your dog with the shampoo prescribed for the kind of mange your dog has, be sure to shampoo as often as it's directed. Prevent socialization between your dog, and other dogs. Your dog's treatment may last up to one month, and he will remain contagious for two to four weeks following treatment. Avoid contact between your dog and local wildlife. Do not walk your dog in areas where there are known fox or coyote dens.
