lab puppy feeding

Question
My Lab puppy is 12 weeks and like most labs will eat any amount of food. We are presently feeding her 1/2 cup dry puppy chow 3 times per day. When do you suggest increasing the amount of her food and decreasing her feeding frequency (our 7 year old 54 pound lab does fine on 2 cups once a day).

Answer
She may actually need more.  You should be feeding a puppy chow now. Switching to an adult chow for the larger breeds at 4 months, slows growth and helps develop sturdier joints.

Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them. Each dog is different. Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs. Here is a link to a good illustrated guide, http://www.longliveyourdog.com/twoplus/RateYourDog.aspx  I frequently check our puppies' ribs and make small adjustments as needed.

You can cut back to 2 meals at 3 months and one at 6 months.
