feeding sheltie puppy

Question
I just got a 11-week old Sheltie puppy who is very small, probably not going to be more than 12", 12 lbs.  I'm not sure how much/often I should be feeding her right now and as she grows.  Is there a chart to which I could refer?

Answer
Hi Mel,

With all kinds of breeders good and bad there is no way to know how your pup will turn out against the akc charts for size.  It does sound like a runt based on your description, however 11 weeks is still early and there is lots of growing left to be done.

Rule of thumb is leave food out twice a day for 5 minutes for a puppy.  They should eat about a cup of puppy growth formula food per serving or less.  You can cut that back to once a day or smaller portions when she gets about a year old or if she starts having more than a small pinch of excess skin over her ribs.

They will always seem hungry to us.  Don't give into that and make a fat puppy.  Do give your pup lots of chew bones and chew toys too!
