Question
Hi there

What is the best kind of brush to use on my sheltie, he is very soft haired and he gets matted very easily.  Is there any kind of detangling shampoo I could buy.  I am based in Scotland.

Thanks

Answer
Hello Elaine!

We highly recommend a slicker brush.  It has a rectangular pad with many short wires.  If you can find one with a backing that pushes out the fur it is easier than the regular brushes.

One of ours has that silky soft fur that is constantly tangled just like yours.  So far we only brush her ears daily and clip the bad tangles when we can.  There doesn't seem to be an easy treatment answer for detangling as it likely would involve some kind of hat or wrap around the head to keep it straight while the sheltie is sleeping.

So the (some might say it's shocking) truth of our shampoo habit is we use whatever conditioning/baby shampoo "no-tears" we use for ourselves.  IF there is a skin issue we do use an oatmeal based dog shampoo.  Sometimes we use a "blue-ing" shampoo on the collar to make it extra-white.

Nothing special.

Hope that helps!
