Shelties and baths

Question
Hi, Our sable pup is 6 months old. How often do you usually bathe a Sheltie and what type of product is best to bathe them with? Also, after the bath, how is the best way to comb out their coat? Thanks!

Answer
Hi Starr,

We just use baby shampoo for our Shelties and bathe them once every 10 days or so, depending on how active they are.  Ours aren't very active, mostly house dogs.  If they have any reaction or skin issues bathe less frequently but you can use coat sprays every few days when you brush.  Also if they have skin issues check into the dog shampoos for that particular issue.

Make sure you pay special attention to washing the ears.

For a comb out on a puppy, use your best judgement.  It's been a while since we have had a puppy and are so used to the adult double coat and using a slicker brush on our adults.  I would recommend a slicker to get them used to it.  If you don't have a slicker yet and the pup's coat is the usual thin early coat then a regular comb might be just fine.

Pay extra attention to brushing the hindquarters.  You will want him to be comfortable with you doing that.
