sheltie longevity

Question
I have a blue merle sheltie that will turn 16 years old in May of 2004.   He has been a great dog for our family.   I have fed him only top quality Eukanuba dog food his entire life.  He is in pretty good shape and still rather active for his age.  His only physical shortcoming is that he has lost most of his hearing.    He is not eating like he used to and I am sure he is on a decline and won't make it much longer. (he probably eats about 5 rations per week compared to the full 7 rations he ate for most of his life).   What is the typical longevity for the Sheltie breed and would you know how long old the oldest Sheltie lived?   thank you,  jim kettlewell

Answer
Hi Jim!

I'm reading this and it makes me very glad to hear that your Sheltie had such a great dad who took very good care of him all these years!

Your companion has reached the usual extended life span of the breed.  Personally, I have no idea how old the "record holder" is for Shelties, but the average is 14 to 16 tops.  That is not to say that yours couldn't go another year or two or 3?  We just need to rely on what the vet thinks about his discomfort situation.

About the hearing, while it is a handicap, a dog's communication is 95% visual, 5% verbal according to some studies.  Communication is not the only drawback obviously, but I'm trying to be positive here.

You know your Sheltie.  I am confident that when you and your vet decide that it is time for him to run in the fields with his forefathers that you will make the right decision.  Until then be his companinon and try to maintain your schedule.  Keep your expectations up but reasonable, and he'll appreciate your efforts.

Jim, enjoy your Sheltie while you can.  I'd be glad to help you find another one when the time comes.
