shaving a Sheltie

Question
Hello Dave,

Can you advise on shaving a Sheltie - this is discussion that Paul and I do not agree on - I say no - however Paul says that shaving them will keep them cool in the summer

Answer
Dorothy,

I'm going to side with you.  I don't shave my Shelties.  Dogs do not have sweat glands nor do they have a natural ability to tan.  Their bodies are designed to be wrapped in this shield of fur.  The fur does provide insulation against heat and UV rays.

Let me stipulate that you must religiously brush your Sheltie with a slicker brush and make sure you are deep brushing that undercoat out.  Also, if you pup is very prone to matting and you are a rare-if-ever kind of person to brush then I'd say do a cut but not a short-short one.  It is better to have short fur than it is to have knots and matting so bad that they tear skin.

I have seen this and it is heartbreaking.

I hope this answers your questions.  I don't shave my Shelties ever.

Dave
