Excessive shedding

Question
Hi Dave
My 2 1/2 year old male Sheltie's fur is thinning. I recall shedding in the fall/winter a year ago, but not like this. He was recently neutered, shortly after - had a bad case of fleas.  Could fleas cause this excessive hair thinning? and will he have thick, full fur again?
Thank you for your time

Answer
Hi Missy,

I am so sorry to hear this.  I would definitely take your Sheltie to the vet on this one.  It sounds like a physical exam and possibly some blood work are in order to establish the cause or eliminate possibilities.  Ask your vet if he is familiar with the breed-specific paculiarities of the Sheltie.   "Normal" thyroid for a dog is "low" for a Shetland Sheepdog for instance.

Also, I have found that the expense of frontline is well worth the benefits in our house.

Hope all turns out well and let me know if I can help again!

Dave
