adoption/sale legal question!?

Question
Dave-
Out of all the 'dog' experts on the site, you seemed like the one that might be able to help me!  I'm not asking about a sheltie, though, I hope that's okay.
Our dogs had a small litter, 3 pups.  One had an immediate 'pending' home, one we decided to keep, and the other was 'looking' for a home.  A friend's brother was interested, and came to meet the pup at 3 wks of age.  We implied, but never stated directly, that he would get the puppy.  No contract was signed, no money changed hands.  We were not charging him for the puppy.  At the last minute, my husband and I decided that something just didn't 'feel' right about this guy, and we were not comfortable giving Sierra to him.  He's now threatening a lawsuit, and/or asking for 'reimbursement' for what he went out and bought... toys, food, etc., as well as compensation towards him getting another dog, for a total of $300.  We are now even more sure that our gut feeling was right, and will not give him the dog.  Does he have any recourse?  Do we?
Sorry to bother you if this is out of your area of expertise, but I have no idea who to ask these questions!

Answer
Hi Kelly,

I'm actually not a lawyer but in my line of work I deal with contracts.  If he didn't get anything in writing and no money changed hands, then there is no contract.  He's just blustering so next time you talk to him tell him you will be happy to talk to his lawyer.

You'll never get that call.  If he's too cheap to go pay for a puppy he won't bother to pay a lawyer.

Don't think one more minute about that guy.  Move on with life because it's too short for idiots like that.

'sneezes
Dave
