My wife and I just bought a shetland puppy and were are currently feeding him Royal Canin Natural Brand Holostic Dog Food.
I was wondering if this is a good brand of dog food? (it was recomended by the breader but a second opion never hurts)
I was also looking into Old Mother Hubbard dog treats.
Is this also a good brand.
The reason for the above two questions is that I want to make sure I am providing a good diet for my puppy in order to give him a good start on a long happy healthy life

Hi John!

Having not heard of this food I did some reasearch.  It looks like some extremely good stuff.  I don't think you can go wrong with a basic idea of the cleanest and simplest possible ingredients.

This is one of the sites that seemed to have the best explination of the product:
http://www.thepetcenter.com/imtop/natural.html

When making recomendations I try to keep to high standards that most people are willing and able to meet (to buy Iames or Pro-plan instead of beneful or alpo).  This choice in dog food certainly is in the highest possible category in quality.

It sounds to me like you are a very pro-active owner and I'm always glad to hear another Sheltie finding a great home!  Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Dave Thank you very much for the quick response if posible could you ofer some advice regarding the question about dog treats (I was also looking into Old Mother Hubbard dog treats.

Answer
Sure!

I guess the best answer is to let you know what we do in our house.

We have kids and pups.  We have an abundance of snack stuff and give the shelties whatever crackers/cereal we currently have open as a treat.  Usually ritz, cheeze-its and sometimes animal crackers-and rarely more than one treat a day.  We don't buy those artificial snacks at most grocery stores.

Because there are hundreds of snacks and foods out there I try to just focus on what to look for in the list of ingredients.  If the Old Mother Hubbard treats you have listed in your question have simple natural ingredients you can't go wrong.

As an aside, what we will buy for our pups is the rawhide chews and rarely the pig's ears.  Shelties are teething until age 2 and will want something to chew on.  In some cases the pup may react badly to rawhide (diarrhea), try a different brand.

Hope that answers your question, let me know if you need anything else!
