Question
In the next few years or so, I will probably buy a second dog.  (I now have a standard poodle)  One reason I choose a poodle for my first dog is I don't like dog fur floating all over the  house.  I am interested in Shelties, though. How much hair do these critters shed?  I was a professional groomer, so I do know how to properly brush a dog. I don't mind some hair, but I don't want gobs floating off the dog all the time.  Please help!  Thanks so much for answering.

Ruth

Answer
Hi Ruth,

Easy answer: double coated is a fur factory.  Way less fur snow than the Alaskan Eskimo dogs make (literally like dumping a pillow-full-of-feathers-in-a-fan fur on the one we rescued back in 2001) but way MORE fur than your typical long hair single coat.  We frankly don't brush our dogs often enough with our work and family schedules.  Even when we are on a regular brushing schedule we still get the tumble weeds on the floor.

You won't get the "floating globs" but you will have collections in the corners of the room.  We really have gotten used to the fur fall off and know where to expect to vaccum at this point.  Commit to the brushing schedule and you should be fine.

I'd also argue the unique personality of the Sheltie makes it worth the trouble, but I'm biased.

I hope that helps!

Dave
