Out of Control Barking

Question
Hi! My parent's 2 year old Sheltie, who was adopted from another family 1 year ago, barks INCESSANTLY whenever they use the microwave or washing machine. NO amount of calming or reprimanding helps~she goes absolutely crazy!! Other appliances or loud noises don't seem to bother her. Any help? She is darling, but this habit is making everyone incredibly frustrated and no one knows why she does it or how to get her to STOP!

Answer
Kara,

I have some bad news about this.  Nothing I have tried will get my Possum to consistently not bark at vacuum cleaners, cameras, blenders, can openers and brooms.  He even recognizes the distinctive noise of the blender's glass pitcher being handled and goes nuts.  I understand that there are other Shelties out there with similar crazy responses to everyday items.

We even tried the bark collar but his "defend against sworn enemy" mentality overrode the collar and we had to take it off.

On a positive side:  I will note that when there is a pigs ear or a peanut-butter filled kong to go after the other items tend to be ignored.  However it isn't healthy to give that stuff as often as you use a microwave.

What we do is either crate him, put him in the large closet in our bedroom for the duration, or we hold him while we use the offending item.

I realize you were likely expecting a much more helpful response.  If I do come across something that works I will certainly give a follow up email.
