Question
My question simply is how many times should I be feeding my shetlie

Answer
Hi Mike!

Good question!  I'll make it more complicated so I can thoroughly answer the question.

I feed mine once per day, approximately 1 cup (maybe a little over) of high quality dog food with a meat as the first ingredient.  NOT CORN!

I NEVER put out a "trough" of food that they can keep going to all day long and snacking on.  That promotes obesity and the food gets stale.

Shelties that are extremely active, as in actually used for herding and run all day, may require morning and evening meals.  Mine just get an evening meal as they sleep most of the day while I'm at work.  My vet has commented that he wishes all his clients did this because there are so many overweight dogs and mine are very trim.

Also, I never feed my animals any food with color in it.  Why the heck is color in some cheaper brands?  It's for the humans, because the dog certainly does not care!  Most major department and wholesale clubs have a choice of an "off brand" dog food where the primary ingredient is a meat base rather than corn.  The side benefit is that less corn is equal to less wasted food, thus less dog droppings! Also the reason why meat based is prefered, because the corn is a filler where the dog has to eat more to get the same level of nutrition.  So the "expensive" is usually much cheaper in the long run.

Just give him a small quantity once a day, or you may choose to split it into quarter cups two times per day, whatever your preference.  Please also remember to keep the table scraps to the bare minimum... I know I can't not give them any at all so we just try to keep it to once a day and only one small bite.

Sorry for the overabundance of info.  Here's the quick recap: 1/2 cup, once a day (based on a fairly relaxed schedule of only a few hours of exercise or less), meat not corn based, no food coloring, cheap food costs more, if giving scraps: just one bite per day.

Hope that helps!
