Question
Hello,
We adopted a 1.5 year old Sheltie in March, he had what I thought was a beautiful coat.  Apparently, he had been an out door dog but because he chases cars and is quite the jumper I thought it would be best for him to stay indoors for now.  Anyway, to make a long story short he has been shedding ever since to the point where his groin area is bald and his chest and bellie are getting the same way.  The coat on his back has no under coat left and is very thin, and dry over his hindquarters,, We took him to the vet and he tested him for thyroid - did a complete blood panel etc.  All was fine.  So he thinks its his food.... I originally had him on Innova (Evo) then noticed he was scratching more than usual so I switched him to Wellness Fish and Potato.  He's been on that for about 1 month.  Still Shedding like crazy possibly even more now.  Vet gave us some Omega Oils to add to his food and suggested that we try Eukanuba hypoallergenic food.  Makes me nervous with all the food scares.  Just wondering if you have any great suggestions.
Also, he was just neutered in April. Not sure if that should make a difference. (???)  Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
Hi Britta,

Thank you for adopting!! I think your problem would drive crazy if it happened to me.  I'm very glad to see you are pro-active with your vet to get to the root of his problem.  Make sure your vet knows that "normal" thyroid is bad for Shelties, they run very high normal levels- ask him to research this.

I find the neutering to be a highly unlikely source but I am not a veterinarian.

I personally buy the Sam's Club-generic lamb and rice dry dog food and have had no problems.  You may have a problem that the vet has not found yet.

Assuming that those are ok you can approach this from the anything is possible category.  List everything that your pup comes into contact with:
air freshener
detergents
cologne
carpet cleaner
shampoo
treats
kid's shampoo/soap
flea treatments
bleach
dryer sheets like bounce
yard service treatments-fertilizers
pest control companies
hairspray

Make a list like this.  Anything is possible.  Let me know if you figure out what the problem is!

Dave
