anal sac

Question
Dave, the same 5 year old sheltie, also has to have his anal sacs cleaned at least once a month. We notice a big difference in his bad breath afterwards. Do any of your dogs have the anal sac problem? When I was younger we didn't think anything about seeing our dogs scooting across the lawn on their rear. My parents told me that the dog had worms, wrong. What brand of dog food do you feed your shelties.  Your comments appreciated, thanks. Stuck in Iowa.

Answer
Terry,

You have made a new connection for me... Tucker (garbage breath) experiences anal-gland blockage much more frequently than our other dog!

My wife knows how to put the latex glove on and purge the sacks for that.  Get your vet to show you... I couldn't begin to explain it.  It does need to be done, and we think that the $20-50 charge the vet does might actually be worth it because of the gross factor.

We have been feeding the boys Pro-Plan or the generic type proplan that is at Wal-Mart.  They seem to do well on those brands.  We got some free bags of the purina "beneful"... I'll take them back to the other when we are finished with the free bags.

Hope that answers your questions!
