Question
What is the proper way of cutting a Sheltie's hair? I don't like the frayed hair behind the hind
legs. It is now Summer in New York and can get very hot/humid, how short can I cut and not to take away from her "Sheltie" appearance?

Answer
Hi Valerie!

Usually I advise not to cut the hair at all.  But you were very specific about the hindquarters.  I agree it is a challenge to find time to brush it 2-3 times a week like we need to.

I would trim it no shorter than 1/2 inch around the inner leg and up to under the tail.  Leave the outer shell long but cut out any matting.  You can use scissors or electric trimmers with a guard.

In the past when Tucker ate a tub of mink oil we have trimmed with shears in the center area.  (I'll leave it to you to reason why that would be necessary).  It grew back with no problems.

As far as the rest of the dog, we only brush, we do not trim.  The brushing should be done more frequently as it gets hotter.  At most brush all over once per day, using short strokes with a "slicker" brush.  Make sure to get the undercoat brushed out all the way to the skin.  Using any spray-on conditioner will also help the process.  There are some nice smelling brands at the pet store.

Hope that helps!
