Question
Dave, We recently have decided to give our female sheltie a playmate. She is 3 years old, I first thought of getting another female however afterr talking to others I have been having second thoughts on a female Should I be thinking of a male playmate for her instead?

Answer
Chris,

In almost any type of dog the male-female combination can be better.  If they are fixed it is not as big of a deal.  With Shelties the male-female thing is not usually a big problem because of their gentle temperament and willingness to work in teams.

In other words, get anything you-actually she likes.  I would take her with me and see how she reacts to the new dog if rescue or puppy and let her help you determine who she gets along with.
