Acquiring another Sheltie

Question
Hi Dave.  We have a 15 month old Sheltie we have had for little over a year.  We just adore him and his breed type.  I am considering getting another (probably a puppy) Sheltie. My question is this: Will this make my dog (Kelsey) jealous or feel hurt in any way.  That would be the last thing on Earth I would ever want to do.  My wife and I don't seem to have the time or the young age to exercise as much with Kelsey as much as he probably needs.  New puppy could help and keepthemselves company when we arn't home.  THanks Ed

Answer
Hi Ed!

You have stumbled into the evil dark plot of the Shetland Sheepdog...  you can't just have one!

You are in exactly the same spot we were 4 years ago, and now we have two.

I know that answers your question, but I'll add this caveat: be the pack leader and make sure the pecking order keeps your Kelsey above the new puppy.  Kelsey gets the treat first, gets the love first, gets all the attention prior to the pup.

That is how you keep Kelsey from feeling threatened: maintain pack stability.  Everyone must adhere to this for it to work.  Also, the pup will pick up on Kelsey's habits-both good and bad.
