Overweight Sheltie

Question
Hi, I just recently got my sheltie back from my aunt's house while I was away to college. When I brought her home, she was shaved (because her hair was matted), overweight, and covered in fleas. Just say I was completely heartbroken. It's been about 8 months now and her hair is beautiful again, she's active, and flea free! But my only problem is losing the last few pounds. I would say she's about 40 pounds now (I have no clue what she was before, I would say at least 45 or 48 pounds) and she's eight years old. I was wondering what I could do to help her weight out. I feed her science diet for seniors and she get 1/4 of a pouch of moist and meaty as a treat in her food. Is this weight okay for a full grown sheltie or not? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Answer
Hi Andrea,

Believe it or not, your Sheltie if it is not running the hills all day long working only needs about one heaping cup of high quality dry food (meat not corn as main ingredient-like the science diet) per day.  While I appreciate the treat, I think you should eliminate the wet food because I'm sure you are letting them have too much food.

My pups are a great weight and I haven't ever fed them more than that and a maximum of two small additional dog treats per day.  Never table food.

Anytime a question involves physical response I advise you to double check me with your vet, ok?

Dave
