my overweight sheltie

Question
My sheltie is about7 or 8 years old.  His previous owner had hem nutered when he was a puppy of 6 weeks.  I have heard that dogs who have had this done tend to get overweight as they grow older.  I feed my dog two 1 cup full of high protein, meat indoor food.  I haven't any idea how much he weighs but it seems that he is in active and slow. He also has a limp when he walks after lying down for a while.  Please, Please help me figure out how to lower his weight and help him with his leg.

Answer
Kathy,

Weight: half the food if it is a quality food, it sounds like a quality food.  My active 4 year old pup gets about 1.5 to cups and the less than active 11 year old pup gets just right at one cup.

Limp: go to the vet, now.  There are multiple things it could be ranging from fatigue, muscles asleep, pulled muscle, arthritis, tick carried disease or even dysplasia.

I hope these answers have helped you!

Dave
