College Student Interested In Getting a Lab

Question
I'm a college student that I lives in an apartment. I play a college sport that takes
up a lot of my time but I've always wanted to get a lab. I'm wondering how much
time it takes to train a puppy and if I would be able to give the pup the attention
it disserves with my busy schedule? Can you offer me any suggestions or advice?
Also, typically how much would a Black Lab cost?

Answer
The costs of Labs vary from breeder to breeder. Consider getting a Lab/Lab mix at your local shelter. We got one of our dogs at the shelter for $25! I would highly suggest adopting an older dog. Will you have enough time to take him/her on a thirty minute walk, once in the morning, once in the evening? You can usually take puppy training classes at your local Petsmart, however, if you adopt an older dog this won't be a problem. Visit www.petsmart.com for more info. It costs about $100 to enroll in puppy classes.
Can you afford to spend $19 a week just on dog food (to be a responsible pet owner it will take more than this)? What about over $100 on a pet bed? Will you be able to spend at least 5 hours with him/her, not including, sleeping/resting and walks every day? Black Labs are usually cheaper when you first buy them. Most of the time you can get them for under $400, unless you want a Lab most breeders would consider a "quality Labrador".  Visit petfinder.com if you meet these requirements. Good luck! If you have any questions, be sure to ask!
