Weight of my lab

Question
Hi, my black lab is just 2 weeks shy of his first birthday. I am afraid he is too small. He only weighs in at about 40 Ibs. He is only about 19-20 inches tall. Is he small for his age or am I mistaken. He hasn't really grown too much for the last 3-4 months. Thanks.

Answer
That is quite small for a Lab, but likely to be his final size.  Likely he hasn't grown all that much the last 6 months.  About all you can do is make sure he has proper body condition for his size and accept him for what he is.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest.  You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
