Question
My chocolate lab broke her leash when the mailman was mailman was delivering mail so the mail man started to run. I mean really run where the dog turned around after the mail man ran up on the neighbors porch and came back to the house the mail man then jump off the porch ran into a back yard and dove over an air conditioner and over a fence. He was obviously hurt and I am concerned of the reprucussions to follow. My dog doesnt bite and we were telling him that and not to run but again was he running and jumping so fast he said he couldnt here us. The superviser came to his rescue and called the police but they said there was nothning they could do. Please advise.
Thanks

Answer
If the dog hasn't been obedience trained, I would enroll in a class immediately.  Even if the dog is normally very good, the class would document his training.  You might also check with the local kennel club on Canine Good Citizen testing.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. You may want to teach ''come, treat''.  This is for emergencies only when the dog has gotten loose accidentally. Use it routinely and you will have nothing to fall back on when your dog is headed for a busy street. "Name, come treat!" is little different from the regular "Name, come!", except the dog gets a great treat when it comes. We are talking a hot dog, cheese, etc. much better than any treat you use routinely.
