Question
We rescued two lab mixes that were dumped as puppies. We already have two indoor schnauzers that also go out in a fenced off area. We use that fence and a larger electric fence around our property so the labs can run. We have had only short periods of success. The labs either destroy their collars for the electric fence or something happens and it breaks. As for the fence, they dig under it. My husband is at his wits end. We are moving to a house with 1.65 acres, less than we have now. We want to get it right this time. What would you suggest for fencing that will not be such a battle?

Answer
Labs are extremely social dogs.  They prefer to be with their people.  And if you adopted 2 that were bonded to one another, and not really into humans that much, you are going to have serious problems.  How long have you had them?

The dogs are escaping because they are bored, and they chew each others collar off in play.

My recommendation before you get to your new house....enroll each dog separately into an obedience class.  And plan a daily walk with each one separately.  You should also plan an hour of play time where you are the focus of the time.

And the labs should not be left outside in the fenced yard without 100% supervision.
