Choc. Lab question

Question
QUESTION: I have a 14 month old choc. lab that has never gone into heat yet? Im wondering if something could be wrong with her?

ANSWER: Call your breeder and ask her about the lines of the dog.  They tend to be similar to the dam in regards to when they go into heat the first time.  It's not unheard of that a lab not have their first heat before 16-18 months.  My girl and her daughters all come in around 11 months.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: I asked and she told me the mother went into her first heat at around 9 months. Every 2 or 3 months she has a strange smell to her that last around 1 week but I never have seen any blood. Could this be her cycle? I have never had a choc. lab before and am concerned.

Answer
Chocolate labs are no different from any other color, other than their fur color.

It's doubtful the smell has anything to do with her heat cycle or her lack of one.  Besides, dogs will cycle about every 6-9 months, so seeing something every 2-3 months would not be a heat.

If you are seriously concerned, you can go see a vet or find a vet in your area that's a reproductive specialist.

Why are you waiting on spaying her anyway?  You might as well do it now.  She's full grown and it's a good time to get it done.
