Question
Hello There
I am new at starting to maybe breed.
I would like to know the right day or days to breed my girl to the stud I have chosen?
And, how many days to gestation of pups to be?
What all do I need handy to assist her in whelping of her puppies for I want to be there and take pictures and all?
Please give me all the information on whelping puppies, if she should have a huge litter how do I know who is who and what do I do?
I need alot of guidance in this if I decide to become a breeder, I have a really good bitch I paid alot for and paying for frozen semen from a top stud also to get her pregnant.
Do you know anything about this also?
Thanks ahead.

Answer
The best time to breed is 9-14 days after the first discharge.  At that time, she should stand to be bred.  Touch her back at the base of her tail and she will flick her tail out of the way.  that is called flagging.

After breeding the average gestation is 63 days.

As for whelping, there have been books written on that.  No responsible person would try to cover it here.  Perhaps try Canine Reproduction, a Breeder's Guide by Phyllis Holst.  Dogs can whelp by themselves.  All you might need to get pictures is a good camera.  However skillful intervention can mean the difference between a healthy litter and losing all the pups and even the mother.  Nothing beats hands on experience.  You have at least over 2 months.  Talk to anyone in your area that breeds dogs.  Offer to come help when they whelp.  The best whelping can always use an extra pair of hands.  Maybe they will even come help you.

I have never done AI.  Nobody knows everything.  Again read, talk to other in your area, and maybe your vet.
